What is VOIP? What do you know about Vonage?
I don’t answer many calls on our home telephone because they’re most often not for me. But earlier today, I recognized the Michigan telephone number on the caller ID so I answered the call.
“Hello, from sunny Mexico,” he said.
My friend, Robert Nelson, had packed the small Vonage VOIP box that he uses in his Michigan home and had taken it in his luggage to Mexico. He’s connected it the high speed Internet line in his villa and he is able to make and receive calls in Mexico using the same phone number and VOIP equipment that he uses in his Michigan home.
VOIP is an acronym for “Voice over Internet Protocol.” It’s the computer technology that is used to transmit voice conversations over an Internet connection.
Chuck I’m think of getting that TREO 700w. What’s the word on it?
Walt Mossberg of the Wall Street Journal said, “Palm’s new Treo 700w uses Microsoft’s Windows Mobile software, but despite some nice features, it’s neither as easy to use nor as powerful as the Palm-based 650.”
He also said, “[Treo 700’s] crucial email and phone functions are also weaker [than the 650]. And there’s a serious bug in its email software that affects individuals, though not corporate users. So the Treo 700w is neither as easy to use nor as powerful as the Treo 650. In addition, the screen on the 700w offers significantly lower resolution than the screen on the 650, and the new model costs twice as much — $400 versus $200.”
How can I use a cheap external hard drive as a back up for my computer?
It seems nearly everyone has an old, unused hard drive on the shelf that was the by-product of a system upgrade. An USB-to-IDE external drive cable allows your old dusty hard drive to become a quick and easy plug-in portable storage device.
How is an AJAX based web mail account different than an IMAP or POP account?
The future of e-mail is portable. Web based, accessible by your computer, your laptop, at your office, at your café, from your web enabled phone. Eventually it will make more sense to not use a computer program to access your e-mail, but instead, leave it on the Internet and use any of a variety of devices to read it and respond to it.
I saw a few promising e-mail technologies at the consumer electronics show in Las Vegas this year. Many of the web-mail providers like Microsoft and Yahoo are switching to an AJAX platform that will make web-based e-mail much easier for users. Read more
